Role-Playing Workshops: Experiencing Research Insights through Design Thinking Practices

Our organization has leveraged ethnographic research to inform the user-centered design of our products and services. Such research has yielded deep and reliable insights we were not able to acquire through other means.

Immersing stakeholders in these Contextual Inquiry insights was critical to the success of our research. We initially employed several approaches rooted in passive consumption of research insights. However, these approaches did not lead our stakeholders to understand the insights at a deep, experiential level. As a result, we developed and iteratively refined an immersive, role-playing workshop rooted in Design Thinking practices.

Workshop participants have been enthusiastic in praising the workshop and its fresh approach to engaging teams in experiencing research insights. This reception has fueled considerable demand across our organization and we have delivered the workshop nine times to date. In addition, participants have leveraged workshop insights in successful product designs that have been delivered to market.
